Contrary to what one might think, non-interactive maps are much more difficult to design than web-based maps. Its not possible to toggle layers on and off, or to provide extra detail via a tooltip. Designing a map for print requires discipline, a clear sense of hierarchy, and the ability to lead the reader without relying on interaction.
I created many of these maps for publication in the newspaper, and some were made as educational posters to be distributed to classroom teachers.
